  • The Charlottesville Police Department is hosting its third annual National Night Out today at Washington Park — Lower Field from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring a doughnut eating contest, dunking booth and family activities to build trust with local residents under Chief Kochis’s leadership.  106.1 The Corner

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia announced that its search for a new president will begin later this month or early September and is expected to take 4-6 months with the help of an external search firm. The process will be guided by a 28-member search committee — including three students — as detailed at a Board of Visitors meeting at Boar’s Head Resort.  Cville Right Now
  • Paul Mahoney, the former dean of the Law School, was unanimously appointed as interim president after Jim Ryan resigned at the end of June amid ongoing negotiations with the Department of Justice regarding alleged non-compliance with anti-discrimination civil rights laws — his start date has not been announced.  The Cavalier Daily

  • City councilors discussed renovating public schools because many buildings are outdated and affect student and staff well-being. They will decide on how to fund the upgrades during next year’s budget cycle—state funding is not sufficient.  29 News
  • Sen. Creigh Deeds sent a six-page letter with 46 questions to the UVA Board of Visitors asking if political interference or federal pressure led to former President Jim Ryan’s resignation. The letter details inquiries about DEI policies, consultations with the Department of Justice and communications with state officials—seeking clear public accountability.  Cville Right Now
  • The water main construction on Locust Ave continues and will cause daily road closures between Poplar and Hazel from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.—motorists and pedestrians are advised to use detours and alternate routes during these hours.  106.1 The Corner
