  • Police in Charlottesville and Albemarle hosted National Night Out on August 6 to build community trust through events like dunk tanks, putt-putt—donut eating contests delighted families and strengthened local bonds.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Charlottesville med-tech startup Luminoah is a finalist in the Startup World Cup in Virginia and will compete later this month for a chance at a $1 million prize plus the funds will boost its research on compact feeding tube devices. The company, inspired by a young boy’s cancer battle and his father’s determination, plans to reinvest any prize money into its mission.  29 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Three alleged street racers were convicted in Albemarle County court on July 28 with Christopher Cook receiving a suspended jail sentence pending a driving class and community service—while Omar Espinoza and Josue Daniel Suazo Toro were sentenced to 10 days in jail for reckless driving and driving without a license, and Mason Wayne Payne’s racing case will be reviewed on August 15 following new speeding charges.  The Daily Progress

  • Reeya Verma led TEDxUVA to regain official TEDx licensing and hosted the True North conference that featured talks from University alumni. The former president (a fourth-year College student) recounted how the student-run organization evolved under her leadership.  The Cavalier Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • City of Promise piloted a summer reading program for 17 elementary students (to lessen learning gaps) with tutoring four days a week as Charlottesville students head back to school soon. The program built individual reading plans and its organizers will expand it next summer (to help more students reach grade level).  29 News
  • Charlottesville City Schools confirmed Monday they continued to serve free breakfast and lunch to students under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs + the district has used the Community Eligibility Provision since 2010 and will start the school year on August 13th.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle County police met their urban response time goals but took an average of 11:02 to reach calls in rural areas—challenges linked to large distances and old road networks. County officials commissioned a public safety study and added 5 new officers to improve service.  3WV

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA scientists are developing an AI imaging method to help doctors tell cancer growth from treatment changes in brain cancer patients. Their early tests with 26 patients showed 74% accuracy—further work will use new funds to improve the system for faster care.  3WV
  • UVA neurologist Dr. Jose Posas said young athletes who suffer multiple concussions can still play their sports if doctors use careful tests to check for issues with vision, balance (and memory). He said tailored treatment plans can help athletes recover well and even switch to less risky sports if needed.  3WV
