COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, 4th Street in Charlottesville closed for a memorial honoring Heather Heyer—killed in the 2017 protests—and community members gathered to remember her impact. Organizers urged the government to turn the area into a permanent green space and offer survivors up to $500 in support for healing.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Monticello secured a grant of $1 million for a period of two years from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to rebuild civic infrastructure and boost museum engagement with the Educating for American Democracy network (a group of over 200 institutions preparing to bring history alive ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration on Independence in 2026).  3WV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia today took exception to a Student Council no confidence resolution on the Board of Visitors presidential selection process — stating that student involvement is now higher than in the 2017 search. The statement noted that a committee including current student Gregory Perryman, council member Quana Dennis, adult learner Dr. Babur Lateef and Olympic athlete Gretchen Walsh with Vice President Kenyon Bonner will allow many stakeholders to share their input.  Cville Right Now
  • ACPS said 29 Albemarle County students do not have a bus seat for today because the rules for new bus riders were unclear, and families are rushing to get help. Some parents said they never got messages, and ACPS will start adding names today—taking up to 10 days to resolve the issue.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • School zone speed cameras in Charlottesville and Albemarle County are activated during school start and dismissal times today—Albemarle cameras on Hydraulic Road and Lambs Lane enforce no grace period while new Crozet cameras have a 30-day grace period and Charlottesville zones allow grace until September 7 before fines apply.  Cville Right Now
  • VDOT will host a public meeting tomorrow at the Carver Rec Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to gather input on improving the busy intersection at Ridge Street — West Main, where tens of thousands of drivers pass daily.  29 News
  • VDOT and city officials will hold a public information meeting tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Carver Rec Center to discuss improvements for the busy Ridge-West Main Street intersection—this meeting kicks off a two-week online survey from August 14 to 28 for public feedback.  106.1 The Corner

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Virginia researchers are testing SHUTi, an online tool that uses sleep diaries to build personalized sleep routines for older adults who face high rates of insomnia, and more than half of the 300 trial participants reported better sleep with benefits lasting for years.  29 News
