  • CvilleBioHub announced it will expand its Commonwealth BioAccelerator and North Fork Discovery Park facilities in northern Albemarle County—millions in new funding will support the project.  CBS 19 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia named Dr. Colin Derdeyn as interim dean of the School of Medicine after Dr. Melina Kibbe resigned—effective Sept. 3—to lead UT Health Houston. Dr. Derdeyn, a UVA alum and radiology chair since 2024, accepted the appointment.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Inez Gonzalez will resign as the executive director of Charlottesville’s Police Civilian Oversight Board effective tomorrow—leaving the board weakened after it lost half its members—and she will take a similar role in California while urging the community to work on codifying its achievements.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • State Sen. Creigh Deeds said the UVA Board of Visitors has not shielded the university from outside influences as key decisions near the end of Jim Ryan’s term may have lacked input from former leaders—he sits on committees that oversee university actions. He wrote a letter nearly two weeks ago with questions for the board—he still backs interim President Paul Mahoney.  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville is asking developers and organizations for submissions of multi-family affordable housing projects as part of its annual capital housing planning—proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. on September 12.  29 News
  • Circuit Court Judge Claude V. Worrell II ruled that arguments in the White vs. Charlottesville case over the revised zoning ordinance will continue as the city must file defense arguments by Monday and the plaintiffs must reply by Wednesday. Mayor Juandiego Wade said the city will re-pass the ordinance that allows taller buildings to boost housing opportunities, no matter the case outcome.  Cville Right Now
  • School speed zone cameras at Tall Oaks Elementary, Summit Elementary, and Charlottesville Middle in Charlottesville and at Western Albemarle High, Henley Middle, and Brownsville Elementary in Albemarle County are now in a warning period until September 7 and September 12 respectively—drivers who go more than 10 mph over the limit are monitored in person until the cameras start ticketing. Officials installed the cameras to help reduce dangerous speeding near schools.  29 News
