CRIME NEWS

  • Elijawah Darius Scott, a 22-year-old former waiter at Bizou in downtown Charlottesville, pleaded guilty to writing unauthorized checks totaling over $16,000 from the restaurant’s checkbook from September through December 2023 — he now faces a presentence investigation with sentencing set for October.  The Daily Progress

  • The Soul of Cville Festival, now in its fifth year—growing from three to six days—moved its Best in Black Cville awards ceremony to the Paramount Theater for live announcements tonight. The festival—started after the Unite the Right rally—celebrates Charlottesville’s African-American community with events such as Soul Skate, Blacks in Tech mixer, Afrobeats X Carnivale, Trap Karaoke, and an End of Summer wrap-up at Washington Park.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Creigh Deeds sent a six-page, 46-question letter to UVa Rector Rachel Sheridan and Vice Rector Porter Wilkinson on Aug. 1 — asking if they played a role in President Jim Ryan’s resignation amid concerns over DEI policy changes — and gave them until Friday to respond. The senator wants clear answers about whether political pressure affected the university’s decision-making.  The Daily Progress
  • On June 30, Charlottesville Circuit Judge Claude Worrell ruled the city’s 2024 development code null and void while allowing time for a traffic study inquiry. Legal analyst Scott Goodman said the civil case will drag on for a long time as plaintiffs delay their response—city leaders plan to reinstate the code soon—keeping the ruling in effect for now.  Cville Right Now
