BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Lab Distilling has celebrated 10 years in Charlottesville through loyal customer support and a commitment to honest craft distilling using a handmade copper still. Owner Ivar Aass said the business will continue working with regional growers and expand its reach.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alexandria Searls resigned as director of the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center after 22 years and said the controversy over a statue should not define her legacy. She will leave on Sept. 1 to study art at James Madison University—hoping to work with local groups to plan a new home for the sculpture.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 4, the Board of Visitors named Paul G. Mahoney as interim president after former President Jim Ryan resigned under pressure from the Department of Justice—he will lead the University until a new president is chosen. Mahoney plans to meet with community members soon to focus on education, research and care.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Charlottesville Middle School held a ribbon cutting on August 14 for its new $90-plus-million building that now houses 590 students—its bright classrooms, state-of-the-art gym, and art spaces marked a new era in local education, with leaders and architects celebrating the facility and planning further expansion next year.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin told the General Assembly that Virginia’s finances were strong with a $1.7 billion cash cushion heading into fiscal year 2026—he criticized Fairfax County for high taxes and weak business incentives. He will propose a new two-year budget in December before leaving office in January.  The Daily Progress
  • Local law enforcement reminds drivers not to pass stopped school buses today because students are back in school+ officers will issue tickets to violators.  CBS 19 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Medical Center reported an increase in heat-related emergency department visits this summer—especially among elderly and unhoused persons—as state data shows 3,572 visits by August 12 compared to last summer's total. Health officials warn that high humidity may prolong the risk as temperatures remain high through September.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

  • Virginia women’s soccer beat West Virginia in their season opener on Thursday night in Morgantown when junior midfielder Carter headed a corner kick in the 64th minute—Coach Steve Swanson said the win showed the team’s grit.
