- ➤ James Monroe’s Highland partnered with the American Friends of Lafayette during a weekend event that marked the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s return tour as visitors watched dramatic readings—exploring historic documents and viewing reenactments of his friendship with Monroe. The event recalled the historic ties of the American Revolution and celebrated an enduring bond between early leaders. 29 News

- ➤ Out-of-state students use the Amtrak train and the small Charlottesville airport—options that offer speed and affordability despite challenges with limited flights and extra taxi costs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Roy Van Doorn, a plaintiff in the White vs. Charlottesville zoning board lawsuit, said on a recent Friday that the new zoning ordinance was passed without proper process and without a required VDOT study—he argued that hundreds felt left out of the decision. The city will defend its actions on Monday while the plaintiffs respond on Wednesday and a final ruling is expected on Friday—Mayor Wade noted the ordinance would be re-passed to address affordable housing despite these issues. 3WV
- ➤ The Charlottesville Police Civilian Oversight Board lost its quorum after many members resigned and lost its director when Inez Gonzalez resigned last Friday. City officials will soon hold a closed session to interview candidates for two seats as they plan modest changes to fix the board’s rules—officials say this is needed for the board to work properly. - ➤ The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority will conduct controlled blasting in a wooded area on UVA property between Hereford Drive and Fontaine Avenue to prepare for a new raw water pipeline from Ragged Mountain Reservoir to the Observatory Water Treatment Plant. Three blasts are scheduled for Monday, August 18, Wednesday, August 20 and Friday, August 22 — each preceded by a siren and may lead to temporary trail closures. Cville Right Now
- ➤ Staunton had a 48-hour boiled water advisory after a 16-inch water main broke early Friday, which forced officials to shut off the system until repairs were done and water tests cleared it. Charlottesville officials approved a four-year plan to add about five miles of large water pipes—boosting redundancy—to help prevent similar disruptions in the future. 3WV
