CULTURE NEWS

  • On August 22, a free music event took place as doors opened at 5 p.m. and Sela Campbell kicked off the show at 5:30—Chamomile and Whiskey headlined later.  29 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville officials and local energy groups are urging homeowners to act as federal tax credits for solar and energy efficiency will expire on September 30—LEAP has launched an incentive blitz that has already helped over 300 local businesses and households switch to cleaner energy. The program aims to boost home upgrades and support the city’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that they acquired a quarter-acre on Cedar Hill Road and will hold a public meeting Tuesday, August 26 (5:30-7:30 PM) at Meadows Presbyterian Church to gather ideas for a new neighborhood park. The plan may include trees, benches, or a small playground and will help guide a funding request aimed at opening the park by spring 2027.  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville City Council approved a VDOT project along Avon Street that will remove 33 on-street parking spots for a shared-use path—complete with a pedestrian bridge over Moores Creek. Some residents and councilors have pushed back, but officials say the project will improve safety along the 0.4-mile corridor between Druid Avenue and Avon Court.  29 News
  • On Friday, the U.S. Department of Education told GMU that President Gregory Washington broke Title VI by using race in hiring and promotions—he must issue an apology and change policies. Meanwhile, UVA is in talks with the Justice Department over civil rights issues after President Jim Ryan resigned.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Foothills Children’s Advocacy Center has helped children who were abused and their families since 2006 by offering special services such as forensic interviews and on-site medical care. The center moved to a new building on Hansen Road on Aug. 15 and will soon add on-site mental health care—hoping to cut long wait times in our area.  3WV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Charlottesville's architect revised designs for a student apartment complex off West Main after receiving criticism from the Board of Architectural Review — the updated plans will be shared soon.  The Daily Progress

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cavaliers' defensive line, known as the Firemen, will test its new 4-2-5 scheme in challenging ACC games against Louisville, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech+ Duke when play resumes. Junior Anthony Britton and key transfers+ will be central as the team prepares to counter strong rushing offenses.  The Cavalier Daily
