COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlottesville residents can help fight hunger by donating to the Commissioners and Cans food drive—managed by the city’s Commissioner of Revenue—which will continue through Aug.31 to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. All donations will stay local to fill gaps in food supply.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

CRIME NEWS

  • Albemarle County police are investigating former elections director Lauren Eddy for alleged financial misconduct and she resigned earlier this month—no charges have been filed so far.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia began its search for a new permanent president to replace Jim Ryan—addressing concerns over shared governance—and will review candidates over the coming weeks.  29 News
  • Interns in the Charlottesville Inclusive Media Internship program gained hands-on experience in web design, digital marketing and news production at Vinegar Hill Magazine, Charlottesville Tomorrow and In My Humble Opinion Radio Show. The program—funded by a grant from the Solidarity Fund of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation—lets local students learn new skills for future media work.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • Piedmont Virginia Community College was approved by the U.S. Department of Justice as a Prison Education Program institution, making it the first state college to receive this accreditation. The college has partnered with correctional centers since 2006—first at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women and later at Buckingham and Dillwyn Correctional Centers—to help over 150 incarcerated students earn an associate degree.  Cville Right Now
  • On August 14, Charlottesville Middle School finished the first phase of a $91 million modernization project that added a new gym and updated classrooms to welcome students back from summer. School, city and state officials said more renovations will be completed by next fall—bringing a new performing arts center and extra classroom space.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UVA is quietly negotiating a voluntary compliance agreement with the DOJ over its race-conscious policies that may change hiring, admissions and federal funding for community nonprofits—faculty worry the deal could mirror the stricter terms seen at Columbia.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia's linebackers will play in 2025 and rely on staying healthy to improve a defense that finished low in the ACC last season. Coach Tony Elliott said junior Kam Robinson is week-to-week with a fractured collarbone while junior Maddox Marcellus and others will step up to turn things around.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The University of Virginia announced that new quarterback Chandler Morris joined Coach Tony Elliott on Tuesday night’s Coach’s Corner—broadcast on NewsRadio 98.9/AM1070 WINA and held at Milkman’s Bar in Dairy Market. Morris transferred from North Texas and is set to start for the Cavaliers in Saturday's season opener at Scott Stadium against Coastal Carolina.  3WV
