CULTURE NEWS

  • Charlottesville Pride is hosting its 12th PrideFest today at the Ting Pavilion from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. About 90 local vendors will join with four bands and a drag show — making the event a celebration that also recalls its protest roots.  3WV
  • The 12th annual Maupintown Film Festival returns this weekend at Jefferson School African American Heritage Center with 17 films and a talk about Black history and the fight against oppression — the event carries the theme Bold and Beautiful. Local filmmaker Lorenzo Dickerson started the festival 12 years ago to share overlooked stories and now it brings films and speakers from all over the country.  Cville Right Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Share Our Strength’s survey for the No Did Hungry Virginia campaign shows 45% of Virginians are in debt due to rising food costs—with 52% of families with school-aged children in the Charlottesville area struggling more and 84% reporting prices are rising faster than incomes. Many households must now choose between buying healthy food and paying for other essentials.  3WV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia is hosting its Fall Career and Community Fair on Tuesday, Oct 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hillsdale Conference Center, where local job seekers can meet over 70 employers and attend free workshops on Sep 17 and Oct 1 to get ready for interviews—opportunities for new career paths are expected.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • Charlottesville Schools ranked second in Virginia for per student spending—paying $18,495 for each of 4,400 students.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville City Attorney John Maddux said he reached an agreement with the Gentry Locke law firm—despite its missed filing deadline in the zoning suit—to keep them on the case at a reduced rate. He added that with new lead counsel the case is back on track and the city expects to see the zoning upheld in court.  3WV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia beat VCU 25-20, 25-13, 16-25, 25-23 in its home opener at the Aquatic and Fitness Center as the team showed grit with strong plays from key players like Kadynce Boothe and Reagan Ennist—setting a confident start for the season.
