  • Charlottesville business VetScore uses AI to help veterans file disability claims by scanning medical records and flagging possible issues to ensure they receive the right benefits—its founders, sons of veterans, designed the tool to simplify a process that is often costly and time-consuming. The company will seek more philanthropic support to keep its service free for veterans.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Virginia search committee met recently to find a new president and has faced criticism from students and faculty who say it lacks full representation of the university community—its plan is to narrow the field to three finalists with a decision expected in four to six months. This process will include gathering input through surveys and forums to better reflect local concerns.  The Daily Progress

  • On September 10, Charlottesville officials incorporated public feedback into their SRO plan to improve housing options. The revised plan will guide future housing policies and community support.  The Daily Progress
  • The University’s Board of Visitors is meeting today amid concerns that its membership does not meet Code of Virginia requirements—Wahoos4UVA claims the board lacks enough Virginia residents and University alumni, and Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell has urged a pause on board actions until compliance is confirmed.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Charlottesville Police Department will host its Fall Community Police Academy starting Sept 23 and running for nine weeks with applications open until Sept 19; the course gives locals a behind-the-scenes look at police work—lessons cover investigations, forensics and use of force to help build trust with officers.  3WV
  • Albemarle County rolled out a new GIS viewer in July after a cyberattack and added two parcel filter tools that let users search by sale dates and subdivisions more precisely—county officials noted that the County Maps page remains under maintenance while its content is modernized.  106.1 The Corner
  • The Albemarle County Planning Commission deferred a decision on Riverbend Development's proposal at the southwest corner of Interstate 64 and Route 29 to December 16 after a 3 each vote — the developer requested the delay to update the plan for a housing and commercial mix with better affordable options.   • Virginia volleyball lost to Auburn after being swept 25-17, 25-16, and 25-21 in the first-ever NCAA Showdown at the Net tournament on Tuesday. The Cavaliers committed 21 errors—adding pressure as they prepare to face Michigan at 6 p.m. Friday.  The Cavalier Daily

  • New coach Ryan Odom is rebuilding UVA basketball by letting his players try new roles without fear—he observed how players like Onyenso and Mallory used free play to show their skills.
