COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlottesville Police Department is accepting applications for its fall Community Police Academy— a two-month course that meets Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and gives local residents a behind-the-scenes look at police work in areas such as investigations, the K-9 Unit and forensics, with applications closing on September 19.  29 News
  • Sedona Taphouse in Charlottesville donated over $1,600 to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 33 to help local veterans file for benefits and transition to civilian life — the restaurant also received a plaque in thanks for its support.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Luminoah, a Charlottesville-based med-tech company, will represent the commonwealth at the Startup World Cup in San Francisco from October 15-17 to pitch for a $1 million prize—its innovative pocket-sized feeding tube was developed after founder Neal Piper saw aging technology hinder care during his son’s treatment.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Paramount Theater in Charlottesville has launched the Kids Club for children 12 and under to offer free movie tickets and popcorn, with the first screening of Wallace & Gromit scheduled for October 12 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (additional films will be announced) (registration must be completed online before showtime).  3WV
  • The Botanical Garden of the Piedmont raised over $10 million in its capital campaign—using the money to build a four season garden pavilion with a basement—and will start building next year.  29 News
  • The Botanical Garden of the Piedmont raised over $10 million for its project+ it plans to start construction next year on its current nature reserve to build Central Virginia’s first botanical garden. The site has hosted over 180 community events+ which shows its ongoing impact in the area.  106.1 The Corner

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A week into new weapons screenings at Albemarle’s three high schools, the progress report said the process needs improvement after students complained about being late—School Board Chair Kate Acuff said training for screeners and students will be adjusted soon.  3WV
  • UVa is considering giving the historic OakLawn estate in Fifeville to Charlottesville City Schools on a rent-to-own plan, with a Board of Visitors vote set for later this week. The property—bought for $3.5 million and tied to Thomas Jefferson—is planned to support expanded school programs.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.Va. Board meeting on Friday had protesters waiting outside a small room with a capacity for only 60 people — a setup that legal expert Martingayle said could lead to a successful lawsuit if challenged in court. The University said it followed state law by livestreaming the proceedings and adhering to fire code limits.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors approved leasing Oak Lawn in Fifeville to Charlottesville City Schools yesterday—city officials say the move follows a federal award shift and will support expanded programs in early childhood and career education.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mitchell Rosner, MD was named CEO and executive vice president for health affairs at UVA Health for a three-year term after serving as interim for seven months with support from more than two dozen health leaders. He said he is honored to continue his long career at UVA and will work to strengthen patient care across the health system—now including four hospitals.  Cville Right Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia's women's soccer team beat No. 2 Duke 3-1 in their ACC opener at Klöcker Stadium on Thursday night—showing they are true conference and national title contenders by staying unbeaten in three straight ranked matchups. They will host VCU on Sunday at 5 p.m.—their final non-conference game before continuing ACC play at Syracuse.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia fall sports programs are adjusting to new roster limits set by a House v NCAA settlement; the men’s soccer team now has 30 players and coach Gelnovatch said the change makes practice management easier—other teams like volleyball and tennis remain less impacted as some use grandfather provisions to retain current players. This shift will influence recruiting and game strategy as teams adapt to the new rules.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Former Western Albemarle punter Carter Boyd, who grew up attending UVA football games, will play today for William & Mary against the Cavaliers. He won the starting role in a competition and is averaging strong punt yards as his coach praises his focus—expecting him to perform well.  3WV
