COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, 2,100 volunteers took part in the United Way Day of Caring in Charlottesville and Albemarle County by completing 115 projects such as cleaning invasive plants and hosting an inclusive prom for people with disabilities. Organizers hope the event will inspire more ongoing community service.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two native Argentines who met in Miami opened Noble Steakhouse in Charlottesville to serve traditional Argentine asado—meat cooked over a wood fire with salt, chimichurri, and red peppers. Located across the train tracks from the Water Street Parking garage, the restaurant opened Sept 6 and is open Thursday—Monday from 5—9 p.m., with most customers leaving happy as the team fine-tunes a few details.  Cville Right Now
  • Rock Revolution Climbing opened recently in a 6,620-square-foot building on Old Ivy Road and now plans to expand over Afton Mountain—adding rope climbing walls and a youth club team to offer more choices for climbers.  The Daily Progress

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Triple A survey shows that the average cost to own and operate a new vehicle in 2025 is $11,577, down $719 from last year due to lower depreciation, finance charges, and fuel prices. Triple A noted that while lower costs in small sedans and EVs may offer savings, buyers should also consider higher insurance fees for larger vehicles—emphasizing the need for a balanced decision.  3WV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVA researchers say that teen voices must be included in setting cell phone rules for Charlottesville schools — a move that could improve both safety and focus in classrooms. At Charlottesville Middle School students follow a strict no-phone policy and use email or a school phone for emergencies.  29 News
  • First-year commerce students face a rigorous rush process for business fraternities that offer mentoring, networking, and a supportive community at the University. Groups like Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Kappa Psi continue to attract strong interest as students, including many from out of state and minority backgrounds, work hard to secure a spot.  The Cavalier Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting begins on Friday, September 19, with both in-person and mail-in ballots as City Hall remains open Monday through Friday until two weeks before the election—elections director Taylor Yowell urged residents to register early since the final registration day is October 24.  29 News
  • Virginia lawmakers are facing more than $2 billion in bills and shifting federal costs, so they are weighing tough tax changes to protect essential programs. Local Sen. Creigh Deeds warned that these budget challenges may force cuts that will lower Medicaid and education funding—placing added pressure on state services.  The Daily Progress

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new nonhormonal pill called Elinzanetant has completed its trial to treat hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and sleep problems for women going through menopause. The University of Virginia reported the drug is safe for women who cannot take estrogen+ it also worked well for women battling breast cancer.  29 News

  • Western Albemarle High School senior quarterback Gray Heilman was named Falcon Club Player of the Week—an honor recognizing his performance this season.  29 News
  • UVA is building a hotel and conference center near its football practice fields that will open this spring, and some worry that north-facing rooms could let outsiders spy on practices—though the athletic department said only a few rooms have limited views and is planning a visual barrier. The university will explore privacy options to keep the team’s strategies secure.  3WV
