COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army officials in Charlottesville said they will need to raise $2.3 million by December 31 to continue expanding its Center of Hope and build a larger shelter that will double its current bed count. The group has already raised more than half of its $28 million goal—without the funds, construction plans may stall and delay work until 2026.  29 News
  • LV Collective, a Texas developer, has proposed an 11-story apartment building on West Main Street to serve student housing for the University of Virginia. Neighbors in Westhaven, Tenth and Page have rallied against the plan—arguing it will overwhelm their community and reduce affordable housing—and now demand more local input before the project proceeds.  29 News
  • Loaves and Fishes is replacing its 13-year-old freezer with a new unit that is flush to the concrete floor & two feet higher in the same space to add storage and allow forklift access. Construction will begin next week on September 29, the center will close until October 8, and it will reopen on October 9.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Film Festival announced its 2025 lineup at a launch party at the Paramount Theater — it will run in Charlottesville from Oct. 22 to 26 and show over 125 films along with panels and galas.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Interim President Paul Mahoney said he would focus on shared governance by listening to faculty—staff, students and alumni—while working closely with the Board to stabilize the University. He noted that two Justice Department investigations were closed and that the University is in talks over five ongoing probes as it prepares for the 10th president.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Depaul Community Resources in Charlottesville has celebrated 20 years of helping young adults leaving foster care gain independence. The program offers furnished apartments and mentorship to support youth in getting driver’s licenses, cars and jobs, and it plans to expand its services.  29 News

  • Charlottesville opened affordable housing grant applications today for organizations working to help residents in need — officials will announce details on deadlines and eligibility soon — as part of the city's effort to support affordable housing initiatives.  29 News

  • UVA Health specialists explained thyroid cancer symptoms—when to see a doctor and what treatment options are available—to help locals recognize warning signs early. The guidance provides clear steps for seeking care if thyroid issues are suspected.  29 News
  • A local hospital in Charlottesville is putting names on doctors' hats (after receiving patient requests) to help patients know who is caring for them (improving communication).  CBS 19 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia’s No. 1 women’s soccer team has remained unbeaten this season thanks to goalkeeper Victoria Safradin — who has made crucial saves in shutout games against Penn State and Duke. The team will play three unranked ACC opponents before an away match with No. 2 Stanford on Oct. 12 and later face No. 7 Florida State as they prepare for the ACC and NCAA tournaments in November.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Charlottesville High School wide receiver and cornerback Vitto Pallini—named Falcon Club Player of the Week—earned the honor for his strong performance on the field, as confirmed by school officials.  29 News
  • Charlottesville High School wide receiver and cornerback Vitto Pallini was named the week’s Falcon Club Player of the Week after his strong play in the win over John Marshall—his award honors his effort both on and off the field. Head Coach Terrell Mulford said his hard work in practice and the team’s focus on finishing plays will boost their confidence as they prepare for a rivalry game against Albemarle today.  29 News
