COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The second annual Big Serve pickleball tournament supported Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge at Darden Towe Park and drew players of all ages into competitive, social, and instructional brackets — clinics helped beginners learn the game while building new connections locally.  29 News
  • Today, players of all ages competed in the second annual 'Big Serve' pickleball tournament—raising funds to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.  29 News
  • Give and Take Coffee and Tea partnered with Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge for an adoption event that allowed locals to meet rescue dogs available for adoption and fostering — raising funds for the nonprofit's animal welfare work. The event also featured blooms4good and Chanterelle Cafe, with 10% of Sunday sales benefiting the organization.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Norfolk & Western 611 steam locomotive, known as the Queen of Steam—an old but famous engine—returned from Victoria Station in Goshen to pull the Shenandoah Valley Limited excursions, which began this past weekend and will run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for five weekends. This service highlights Virginia’s rich railroading history for local riders.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student Council approved a $271,769.11 budget for the 2025-26 academic year on Sept. 16—an increase of $40,000 from last year—with funds coming from the Student Activities Fee, Council fundraising and a gift from former President Jim Ryan to support groups like the Organizations Branch and SAS for Mutual Aid and other services.  The Cavalier Daily
  • McIntire School of Commerce expanded to a three-year curriculum with about 400 more students, prompting a major renovation on the Breeden Commerce Grounds. An 86,000-square-foot Shumway Hall, funded by a $30 million gift, was constructed and Cobb Hall was updated with a restored solarium—creating open, modern spaces that blend new technology with historic design.  The Cavalier Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia's Cavaliers field hockey team beat Stanford 2-0 during a Friday match in California to extend their eight-game ACC winning streak—graduate midfielder Suze Leemans scored the key goal during a corner play. The team will face Duke on Friday at 5 p.m.  The Cavalier Daily
  • UVA football earned a top-25 ranking in the AP poll for the first time since 2019—marking a milestone for the team. Ohio State held the No. 1 spot while other schools like Oregon, Miami, and Ole Miss also moved up in the rankings.  29 News
  • Virginia’s women tennis players competed at the ITA All-American Championship in Cary where none qualified for the NCAA draws, though the doubles teams won their first matches—showing promise for the season. The team returned home with lessons learned and will host the Wahoowa Invitational from Oct 10-12—setting the stage for the Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg from Oct 16-21.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia's Cavaliers lost to No. 3 Stanford in a four-set match at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday with set scores of 15 to 25, 14 to 25, 25 to 22, and 17 to 25 (their first ACC loss), and they will return to the venue Sunday at 1:30 p.m. to face California.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia Swimming will hold an exhibition meet on Saturday at Navy’s Lejeune Hall with only 35 of its 50-roster swimmers because 14 are set to attend the Golden Goggle awards in Denver—showing the team’s depth as they test new race formats ahead of a full-roster intrasquad meet later this week.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia Athletics lost $50,000 from an ACC fine after fans stormed the field following a dramatic victory—junior defensive back Ja’Son Prevard secured a game-winning interception yesterday at Scott Stadium.
