  • Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Charlottesville is ready to help defense employees and furloughed Shenandoah National Park staff affected by the federal government shutdown. Spokesperson Les Sinclair said each donated dollar helps provide more than three meals—supporting families facing financial strain.  3WV

  • Littlejohn’s closed after just over a year and the empty space may be used by a student entrepreneur if it stays empty until spring—offering new chances for local business. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economists warned that the ongoing government shutdown is hurting local businesses and delaying paychecks for federal workers — spending is down due to tight budgets. They said if the shutdown lasts over 30 days — echoing past disruptions — more workers may turn to private jobs.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Aqua filed a request on July 30 for over $5.3 million in water revenues and over $2.6 million in wastewater revenues - the utility said it expects the SCC to review the increases soon.  CBS 19 News
  • The White House asked nine top colleges including UVA to sign a new compact that would have them follow the president’s political priorities for admissions, free speech, and sports in exchange for faster access to federal funds — the agreement includes rules like capping international student enrollment and limits on tuition. Officials said schools that choose not to sign may lose these benefits, and they must check each year with polls to show they are following the rules.  29 News

  • A UVA doctor, Marieta Pehlivanova, is studying how near-death experiences change people's lives and why survivors feel scared to talk about them—her work aims to fill the gap in healthcare support for these events.  29 News

  • Coach Ryan Odom began a fresh season on Sept. 23 with a nearly all-new roster, as only three players returned from last year—he now faces the challenge of building team chemistry. Odom is confident that his mix of European freshmen and graduate transfers will lead Virginia basketball to an exciting season with a new full-court press strategy.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia men's soccer beat Milwaukee Panthers 3-2 at Klöckner Stadium as freshman Sami Oulouheu scored the winning goal in the 73rd minute. Coach George Gelnovatch said the win extended the team's unbeaten streak and praised the bench players for their strong impact.  The Cavalier Daily
