  • Friends of the Library is hosting a fall book sale that runs daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until October 12 to support local public libraries.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, about 30 local students and community members gathered at Newcomb’s Commonwealth Room for a Zoom talk where Dr. Courtney Plante presented his long-running Furscience study on the furry community—an effort that covered 50 studies with 30,000 participants and debunked myths about furries. His talk explained that being a furry is mainly about social connection and creative identity rather than the unfounded ideas about mental health.  The Cavalier Daily

  • Albemarle County Fire Rescue is hosting Fire Prevention Week to show residents how to safely handle, charge, and dispose of lithium-ion batteries — a key step to prevent fires. The event runs until October 11 and includes safety tips, a scavenger hunt, and prize opportunities.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers got $13 million from the National Cancer Institute to study new treatments for acute myeloid leukemia. The team will examine small molecules called sphingolipids and use nanotechnology to replace ceramides—an approach that may lead to better results for patients.  3WV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Blue Ridge Home Builders Association is hosting its 62nd Annual Parade of Homes with over 20 in-person tours by 10 regional builders—visitors can also join virtual tours through the end of October. The free event will run October 11—12 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.—showing modern and luxury home designs.  29 News

  • Virginia's defense helped win the game at Louisville as the Cavaliers scored two touchdowns and sacked the opponent five times—key plays that kept them in an overtime 30-27 victory. Coach Tony Elliott said the strong defensive effort helped the team build a 3-0 ACC start.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia’s Cavaliers beat No. 8 Florida State at Scott Stadium by forcing a fumble, an interception and a missed kick—before senior kicker Will Bettridge made a game-saving field goal in overtime to secure the win.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Former Virginia running back Perris Jones reunited with the medical staff who treated his spinal injury during a Louisville game two years ago—he said the visit made him feel grateful for the care he received.  The Daily Progress
  • No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer beat Virginia Tech 2-1 last Saturday at Klöckner Stadium in front of 3,611 fans; senior forward Maggie Cagle and midfielder Lia Godfrey scored while Virginia Tech’s Natalie Mitchell pulled one back.
