- ➤ Charlottesville’s Shelter for Help in Emergency stays open 24/7 to give domestic violence victims a safe place with a hotline and shelter services every day, 365 days a year—providing crucial help for more than 200 households annually. 29 News
- ➤ Thousands gathered at Foxfield Track today for the annual Foxfield Fall Races, a 40-year tradition that brought vibrant competition and community spirit to Charlottesville. Organizers noted that the event showcased colorful racing action and marked another memorable chapter in the long-running local celebration. 29 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A beam was set in place on Monday at Fontaine Research Park for the new 350,000-square-foot Manning Institute of Biotechnology—an important step after breaking ground in December 2023. The project is expected to be completed by holiday time in 2027 following a $100-million gift from the Mannings with additional funds from the state and UVA. 3WV

- ➤ Today, the Charlottesville Fire Department responded to a call from its brand-new Station No. 1 — located on the 250 bypass — marking the station's first operational use. The department will use the new station for future emergency calls in the area. CBS 19 News
- ➤ The Charlottesville City Council debated the purchase (Monday night) of a building on Holiday Drive (for a low barrier homeless shelter). CBS 19 News
- ➤ Dominion Energy will host meetings today and tomorrow at Crozet Methodist Church from 5 to 7 p.m. — the sessions will discuss its 230kV transmission project. CBS 19 News
- ➤ The University of Virginia will host a gun violence prevention panel discussion at CitySpace on Friday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.—local leaders, Baltimore-based experts and public health professionals will share evidence-based strategies to reduce gun violence in Charlottesville. - ➤ Ahmed, an asylum seeker living in Charlottesville, was granted bond by an immigration judge but remains detained because DHS used an auto stay provision—forcing him to continue enduring painful conditions and worsening his mental health. - ➤ Ron Huber has returned to the Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office where he will serve as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney—bringing over 30 years of law experience, including 18 years as an Assistant United States Attorney, to help local citizens today. Cville Right Now

- ➤ UVA Health named chief strategy officer Jason Lineen as interim chief of UVA Health Children's today after the first chief, Cindy Bo, stepped away for personal reasons—he will also keep his chief strategy officer role while leading patient care, operations, and team work. Lineen joined UVA Health in January 2021 and helped plan a 10-year strategy as the network expands care at Riverside Plaza in northern Albemarle County. Cville Right Now

- ➤ On Sunday, Virginia volleyball beat Syracuse in a five-set match at the Aquatic & Fitness Center, earning its first ACC win as freshman outside hitter Reagan Ennist set a record with 32 kills. Coach Shannon Wells said the team overcame injuries to key players — including senior hitters who missed the game — and will build on the win in upcoming matches Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Notre Dame and Sunday against Louisville.
