COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Juniper Joy Farm opened a new farm stand in Keswick today—just 15 minutes outside of Charlottesville, offering fresh local produce to residents.  CBS 19 News
  • Parents in Charlottesville are hosting a memorial golf tournament to honor their son and raise awareness about mental health — the event will bring together community members and support local mental health programs.  29 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tourism spending in the Charlottesville-Albemarle region neared $1 billion in 2024—Albemarle County showed a 6% increase while the City of Charlottesville experienced a decline. Regional officials said tourism supported nearly 7,000 jobs and noted that the Downtown Mall will need new investment to boost future visitor numbers.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Albemarle County School Board expects more attendees than usual at today's meeting at Lane Auditorium, and citizens must sign up by 2 p.m. for public comments—officials note that increased security is planned amid recent social media controversies about a scheduled Turning Point speaker.  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville High School added customizable rice bowls on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after students asked for healthier lunch choices—nutritionist Carlton Jones said the option took years to plan due to staffing challenges and he hopes to add more protein soon.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • The Charlottesville City School Board voted in March to bring back school resource officers starting in August 2026—some parents raised concerns about the plan.  CBS 19 News
  • A coalition of groups at UVA will hold a rally next Friday, October 17 to oppose the Compact from the White House—professor Ian Mullins said the rally demands that the University reject the Administration’s terms to protect academic freedom. Faculty and staff have already voiced their concerns after the Faculty Senate passed a resolution rejecting discussion of the Compact.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the City Council approved a $6.2 million allocation to buy a 27,000-square-foot building on Emmet Street for a low-barrier shelter serving about 150 people, and Mayor Juandiego Wade said the city will make a good faith offer within 30 days. The city plans to refurbish the property and add wraparound care with community partners—efforts meant to provide year-round support to the unhoused.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 10th annual Brewers Ball is happening today from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Charlottesville to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis research — celebrating local Finest Honorees who led weeks of fundraising.  29 News
  • Student Health and Wellness confirmed that 15 university students tested positive for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease since the end of August and several in first-year residence halls reported symptoms such as fever and mouth sores. The health office advised students to wash their hands frequently and avoid close contact to prevent further spread.  The Cavalier Daily
