CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The two-time Grammy-winning band Old Crow Medicine Show will perform at Ting Pavilion in Charlottesville on Thursday as part of their Circle the Wagons tour — the band is known for its energetic country-folk act that connects with local college crowds. - ➤ Historians at Monticello added six more enslaved individuals to the plantation’s Contemplative Site, including four adults (Moses, Nanny, Mary Ann Hern, and Robert) and two children whose names remain unknown, in a private ceremony held in August. The addition raises the total number of known enslaved people to over 610, deepening the study of Thomas Jefferson’s legacy. 29 News

- ➤ Bob Beard, a former CBS19 news anchor and local resident, is running for the Samuel Miller District school board seat in Albemarle County to strengthen public schools. - ➤ The University of Virginia launched the Free Food Alert App — an initiative that connects hungry students and faculty with leftover food from campus events. The app aims to fight hunger and reduce food waste on campus. 29 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Youngkin announced that Merck has begun construction on a 3-billion-dollar pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Rockingham County near Elkton that will add 600 jobs- the project expands from an earlier plan and is part of Merck’s $70 billion commitment to domestic life sciences investment. 3WV
- ➤ Charlottesville’s first public housing site — Westhaven — will be redeveloped into a mixed-use community with more than 260 new units replacing 126 townhomes. The Redevelopment and Housing Authority said construction will take up to two and a half years. 29 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Albemarle County Police Department in partnership with Sentara, Wegmans and the DEA will host National Drug Take Back Day on Oct. 25 to let residents safely dispose of unused or expired medications. The free, anonymous event will operate at 4 drop-off sites (Wegmans, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Sentara Crozet Family Medicine and Sentara Forest Lakes Family Medicine) where all collected items will be properly destroyed. - ➤ No. 3 Virginia women's soccer played Louisville on Saturday and finished with a 1-1 draw. Virginia scored in the 48th minute but Louisville tied the score in the 86th minute—coach Steve Swanson said the team will work on its defense ahead of their Thursday game against No. 7 Florida State at Klöckner Stadium. - ➤ Virginia defeated Virginia Tech in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday, with freshman Reagan Ennist and senior Kadynce Boothe driving the win as the team secured its first home victory this season.
