ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A barn fire on Tuesday evening in Albemarle County killed a horse and rescued four ponies — firefighters contained the blaze in less than an hour while the fire marshal investigates the cause. 29 News

- ➤ VAFF Artistic Director Ilya Tovbis said the 38th annual Virginia Film Festival is on pace for a record year and that tickets for sold-out shows will be re-released through the website or via standby lines at theaters (tickets are returned when ticketholders are unable to attend). 3WV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Virginia Department of Education is voting today on a multi-year plan that will raise SOL passing scores for reading and math from 400 to between 430 & 479. The change will not affect current high school seniors and aims to better align the standards with national benchmarks. Cville Right Now
- ➤ Today, the Career Center hosts 27 career fairs throughout the academic year as fall recruiting ramps up to offer students internships and job opportunities—its resume workshops and one-on-one appointments help them prepare for their careers. The Cavalier Daily
- ➤ Virginia schools met yesterday in Charlottesville at Cybercon where educators and cyber security experts, including John Hammond and Louisa County Public Schools CTO David Childress, discussed the threat of thousands of daily cyber attacks. Advisors recommended using multiple layers of protection such as complex passwords and two-factor authentication to help prevent breaches. 29 News
- ➤ The Rare Book School moved from the basement to the second floor of Shannon Library amid renovations and hosted an Oct 17 open house that welcomed students, faculty, and local community members to explore rare texts through hands-on demonstrations — now it offers summer courses and fellowships that let participants study old books in a meaningful way. - ➤ Spanberger led a political rally in Charlottesville on October 22, 2025 where Pete Buttigieg and Bill Nye spoke to local audiences. 29 News
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture notified Virginia today that SNAP benefits may not be funded for November as the shutdown continues, which could hurt local households who rely on the program for food. Local officials and food banks warned that delays might affect about 7,000 people and urged quick action from Washington. 29 News
- ➤ UVa and the DOJ reached a deal that ends federal investigations into the school. Under the agreement, the school will submit quarterly reports on DEI compliance (diversity, equity and inclusion) to meet federal standards. The Daily Progress

- ➤ Virginia’s women’s basketball team has added veteran players (including national champion Sa’Myah Smith) to build depth and ease star guard Kymora Johnson’s heavy minutes as coach Agugua-Hamilton prepares for a more balanced play this season. - ➤ Women’s tennis players from Virginia advanced in the ITA Atlantic Regional tournament from Thursday through Tuesday. Senior Annabelle Xu, junior Vivian Yang and sophomore Martina Genis Salas earned NCAA Championship bids — with Xu and Yang qualifying in singles and Xu with Genis Salas in doubles — after winning several tight matches. - ➤ UVA's offense, led by quarterback Chandler Morris, recorded high numbers in its first five games but struggled in its last two wins over Louisville and Washington State with fewer yards and a lower passing percentage on key downs.
