  • At the Hindu Students Community's Lawn of Diwali Lights event held Tuesday, students gathered on the Grounds with food, music and rituals to celebrate Diwali — the festival of lights. Eight Lawn rooms offered Indian snacks, henna and saree draping while participants lit diyas and sparklers to honor the theme — light over darkness.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Stonewall Jackson statue that once stood at Court Square in Charlottesville has been transformed into an almost unrecognizable work now shown in a Los Angeles exhibit—its dramatic reimagining marks a significant change from its original form.  29 News

  • The James River Association reported that the river received a 68% or B grade— the same score it received two years ago.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ongoing federal government shutdown may delay SNAP benefits for about 2,500 Charlottesville families, and benefits could be cut off on November 1 if no agreement is reached. Gov Youngkin declared a state emergency to free emergency funds—advising residents to use local food banks if their SNAP support stops.  Cville Right Now
  • On Monday night, Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to spend $6.2 million to buy the 3.8-acre property at 2000 Holiday Dr. to retrofit a 27,000 square-foot building into a low-barrier shelter with about 200 beds and on-site services. Some community members supported the project while business owners raised concerns about safety and potential drops in tax revenue—wishing they had been consulted.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • UVA community members have given mixed reactions to a Justice Department deal—some saying it will boost federal oversight while others worry it may reduce local decision-making.  29 News

  • UVA Health is leading the future of cancer treatment with its world-first Focused Ultrasound Cancer Immunotherapy Center—which uses sound energy to target tumors and boost the immune response.   • Virginia's men's soccer coach George Gelnovatch set a tough schedule that boosted the team to a top NCAA ranking—he planned mostly home nonconference games to reduce travel and build strength against a challenging ACC slate.
