  • Hundreds attended the 32nd annual Martha’s Market—an event showing support for women’s health—as local makers, sellers, and buyers shopped throughout Dairy Market and Downtown Mall.  29 News
  • Madison-Greene Humane Society is struggling to care for more than 60 cats and is asking local residents for support— the shelter needs extra resources for food, medical care, and daily upkeep. Community members are encouraged to help as the need for assistance grows.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond native Melody Roscher premiered her directing debut, 'Bird in Hand', at the Virginia Film Festival on Friday, drawing from personal experiences to set the film in Virginia; she joined a post-screening discussion with producer Saba Zerehi and Marya Gates to highlight the festival’s role in supporting local filmmakers + sustaining the state’s film culture.  Cville Right Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bat Week is underway in Charlottesville from October 24 to 31 to show how bats help pollinate plants and control insects—key roles for growing forests and protecting crops. Local parks will host educational events explaining how to care for bats that face threats from habitat loss and disease.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle and Charlottesville police partnered with the DEA on Drug Take Back Day to set up several drop-off sites for residents to dispose of unwanted prescription medications—helping to prevent misuse and keep dangerous drugs out of homes. The initiative collected hundreds of pounds of medications at locations including Wegmans and local Sentara medical centers.  29 News

  • Hundreds of community members visited the 32nd Martha’s Market at Dairy Market and Downtown Mall on Saturday to support women’s health—15% of vendor sales were donated to breast cancer care programs at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.  29 News

  • Virginia basketball coach Ryan Odom said the team added veteran forward Devin Tillis—known for his good shooting and smart passing—for a key role when they start the season on Nov. 3. Tillis came from UC Irvine and is expected to help the team create mismatches and win games.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia's men's basketball team won an exhibition game against Villanova 75-72 at John Paul Jones Arena as coach Ryan Odom's squad tested its physical play and three-point shooting.   • Virginia wide receiver Jayden Thomas said his punt return plays helped the team win in overtime at UNC—he believes his efforts will influence UVa's approach in upcoming games.  The Daily Progress
  • Nick Simmonds, a freshman forward, scored the program’s first hat trick since 2012 on Saturday in a 4 to 0 win over No. 10 Clemson as Virginia marked Senior Day with a big victory. The win moved the Cavaliers to second in the ACC and extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games—set to boost team momentum ahead of upcoming matches.  The Cavalier Daily
