  • Miles Caton received the festival's Achievement in Music Award at a sold-out event at the Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville—where crowds gathered—to watch a screening of Sinners; he later said he discovered the film's horror elements only after reading the full script—he had spent two months practicing blues guitar for his role.  Cville Right Now
  • Fleshwater headlined their first tour at Jefferson Theater last Friday, playing songs from their new album (2000: In Search of the Endless Sky) and a popular cover that energized the crowd as fans climbed onto the stage.  The Cavalier Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Forty University Law School faculty sent a letter on Oct. 17 stating that the Compact, which tied federal funding to changes in hiring and academic policies, is unconstitutional and amounts to a coercive threat. Interim President Mahoney later wrote to the Department of Education rejecting the deal—while noting the University agrees with many of its principles and looks forward to future federal collaboration to improve higher education.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Many University students balance long night shifts and school. Student Lauren Rylander works 12 hour EMT shifts and CNA Mary Gombos handles hospital shifts while carefully planning their days for rest and study — methods that help them meet work and academic demands — showing their determination to manage multiple responsibilities.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Faculty Senate met on Friday to discuss the University's agreement with the Justice Department that suspended five investigations and now requires quarterly compliance reports—several senators expressed concern that the deal could affect admissions and the search for a new president while they questioned the exclusion of faculty from the negotiations. The Senate later passed a resolution urging officials to meet soon and clarify these issues.  The Cavalier Daily

  • Virginia Fresh Match is helping Charlottesville SNAP recipients stretch food dollars by matching up to $50 for fruits and vegetables at local markets such as The Farmer’s Market at IX and the City Market. The program gives families more money to buy fresh produce—offering greater access to nutritious foods amid high prices.  29 News
  • AAA warns older drivers that built-in vehicle technology—like touchscreen displays and voice controls—can distract them while driving, and urges them to learn about these systems before getting on the road.  29 News
  • Yesterday, hundreds of Charlottesville residents joined the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital—raising over $200,000 to support care and research while flower colors symbolized lives affected by the disease.  29 News
