COMMUNITY NEWS

  • JackFest returned on October 26 at Foxfield to raise funds for families facing childhood cancer by supporting the local Ronald McDonald House+ honoring Charlottesville’s Jack Callahan. The festival featured games and activities+ that brought the community together during treatment.  29 News

  • Charlottesville Tomorrow is hiring a chief operating officer to manage daily operations, finance, and staff culture at its Charlottesville newsroom—this role requires strong leadership and systems thinking and will work in the office until it is filled.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

CULTURE NEWS

  • VPM and Orange Frame Productions premiered the nature documentary Shenandoah at the Virginia Film Festival’s Culbreth Theater—more than six years of work went into filming Shenandoah National Park and honoring the late co-founder Jeff Boedeker. The film will air on VPM this Spring so more people can enjoy its story.  Cville Right Now
  • The 38th Annual Virginia Film Festival ended Sunday evening at the Paramount Theater with a screening of Rental Family. Director Hikari accepted a Breakthrough Director Award while awards for film composition, cinematography, and film music were given—furthermore, a fan favorite winner will be announced later.  Cville Right Now
  • At the Culbreth Theater at UVA, many supporters laughed, cheered, and sang along during the Virginia Film Festival's screening of 'Pep Banned,' a documentary that traces the rise and fall of the famous Pep Band from 1974 to 2003. After the film, former band members and filmmakers answered audience questions — with some wondering if a modern version of the band could ever perform again.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UVA's Faculty Senate said they have grave concerns about the school's deal with the Department of Justice—asking for clear details on its effect on the community—and they expect a formal explanation soon.  29 News
  • Sen. Ghazala Hashmi said she supports a new law to change how Virginia university board members are chosen — the draft bill would require General Assembly approval before board members start serving and give students, faculty, and staff a vote on appointments. She expects to review the draft in the next few weeks and says the change may help protect schools from undue federal and executive pressure.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jefferson Area Board for Aging is offering free Medicare counseling to local residents on Plan D or Advantage plans until Dec. 7. Last year, about half of 3,000 callers switched plans and saved $4 million—helping people choose better coverage for 2026.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • Four university students in Charlottesville work as part-time fitness instructors at local studios while balancing academic studies and extracurricular responsibilities. They prepare personalized routines through extensive training — often improvising or following set choreography — to help clients stay active and build confidence.  The Cavalier Daily
  • At U.Va., researcher Ashley Brandebura and her team used AAV technology to restore the PTN protein in mice with Down syndrome—this experiment reversed symptoms and may lead to future human trials. Brandebura said the study gives hope for addressing challenges in brain function for those with Down syndrome.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Food and Drug Administration is considering approval for a new Parkinson's drug — pioneered at UVA Health — as it reviews the treatment's safety and effectiveness. The decision remains pending while officials complete their evaluation.  CBS 19 News

  • Virginia Cavaliers men’s golf clinched the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga. over the weekend + seniors Ben James and Bryan Lee shot a 68 to help secure a 15-stroke win; the team began competing in the East Lake Cup in Atlanta on Monday.  The Cavalier Daily
  • No. 3 Virginia women’s soccer beat Pittsburgh 2-0 on Senior Day at Klöckner Stadium, honoring its nine seniors and earning a stabilizing win with two early goals by graduate Lia Godfrey—setting the stage for their final home game.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The University of Virginia football program received another multi-million dollar donation from an anonymous donor Friday, boosting the 15th-ranked Cavaliers as they held a 7-1 record for their best start in over 15 years. The gift, one of four major contributions in the past 10 months, supports a plan to build lasting success and fund matched contributions through Dec. 31 — reinforcing ongoing improvements like the new Football Operations Center.  29 News
