  • An archived article recalled a 1974 theater production of 'Dracula' at Jackson P. Burley Middle School that brought playful scares and low ticket prices to school children & family audiences, and it showed how Halloween traditions united University & community members over many decades.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Local artists will perform in the Jazz Parade for Democracy on the Downtown Mall today from 3-4 p.m. The three-act political work features local musicians, two choirs and costumed actors who will invite residents to join in a celebration inspired by New Orleans jazz funeral parades.  Cville Right Now
  • A decades-old Halloween tradition returned on the UVA Lawn when more than 70 student groups donated candy and organized safe, family-friendly fun. Students and local residents enjoyed costumes and treats — renewing a cherished event.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Tuesday’s student council meeting, Dean of Students Nicole Hall shared her journey and plans to strengthen mentorship and career development for students—she also answered questions on academic policies and supported launching the new online Hoos Concerned forum. The council discussed plans to improve 24-hour study space access since college students are currently limited to Nau Hall during late hours.  The Cavalier Daily

  • Fire Chief Dan Eggleston retired Friday, October 31 (after 40 years on the job including 23 years with Albemarle County Fire Rescue) ending a 60-year firefighting career.  29 News
  • Albemarle County Fire Rescue’s Chief Dan Eggleston retired last Friday after 23 years with the department and a 60-year firefighting career—he led changes like modernizing equipment and launching the HART team for mental health crises. He said he will continue to support local safety programs and remain active in the community.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • At UVA Children's, doctors and volunteers dressed in costumes to bring sweets to kids receiving treatment in a reverse trick-or-treating event. The hospital tradition—marking Halloween with fun and care—brings a moment of joy to children during their stay.  29 News
  • Public safety workers from the DMV and UVA Health warned that heavy trick- and trunk-or-treating and Halloween parties posed risks for both pedestrians and drivers as residents enjoyed celebrations over the weekend—officials urged motorists to slow down, keep an eye out for children, and check candy and edibles carefully to prevent accidents and injuries.  3WV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Virginia men’s cross country team, led by Gary Martin—who won an individual title last year—looks strong as they prepare to compete for their first team ACC championship since 2008. They improved their season ranking at key meets like Panorama Farms and the Gans Creek Classic and will rely on seasoned runners to place high in the upcoming race.  The Cavalier Daily
