COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local initiative Through Hunters for the Hungry helps people in need by allowing hunters to donate deer to participating processors (covering processing fees) so that meat reaches those facing food insecurity across Virginia. The program cuts processing costs to ensure more donated venison benefits the community.  29 News
  • Do Good CVille has begun its 10th annual Winter Wear Drive to collect winter coats, sweaters — and pants from multiple sites to help The Haven with warming shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Donations will be accepted through November 17 and will be distributed on November 21 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Ting Pavillion.  29 News
  • Local musician Trey Mitchell is co-organizing Foodstock Fluvanna — a free Thanksgiving weekend concert fundraiser for FLRD Food Pantry — at Bunker Bistro in Lake Monticello on Saturday, November 29th. The event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and it asks for $10 or more donations as local food banks face record demand during the government shutdown.  106.1 The Corner

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new report from the American Lung Association shows that Virginia improved lung cancer cases by eight percent over five years and now ranks fourth in treatment outcomes while only 18.4 percent of eligible people are screened. The report urges state lawmakers to expand insurance coverage for biomarker testing (a tool to choose the best treatment) to boost early diagnosis and survival rates.  29 News

  • During Saturday night’s game against Wake Forest, Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris left after a hit to his head and neck — he did not return — and tests on Sunday and today were planned to check his condition. Backup Daniel Kaelin took over as UVA suffered its first Atlantic Coast Conference loss.  29 News
  • Virginia lost in straight sets to No. 10 SMU on Friday — the loss marked the team's fifth defeat, as it struggled with mistakes on the court. The Cavaliers will face No. 3 Pittsburgh on Sunday at noon.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia field hockey lost 4–1 to North Carolina in the ACC championship Friday— the Tar Heels outplayed the Cavaliers with solid offense and defense. Coach Ole Keusgen said the team struggled with fatigue from back to back high intensity games and will now prepare for the NCAA Tournament.  The Cavalier Daily
  • No. 1 seed Virginia edged No. 9 North Carolina 2-1 at Klöckner Stadium on Sunday when freshman forward Nick Simmonds scored a late winner — sending the Cavaliers into the ACC semifinals. The team will face No. 12 seed California on Thursday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Cavaliers lost 16—9 to Wake Forest but still have a chance to reach the ACC championship game if they win upcoming games against Duke and Virginia Tech; coach Tony Elliott said the team remains focused on its goals and is working to revive its offense.  Cville Right Now
