COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fifeville neighborhood will have its first grocery store in 20 years as the Charlottesville Food Co-op prepares to open at 501 Cherry Ave in fall 2027 (pending a $4 million capital raise).  29 News
  • Homeless service providers in Charlottesville say more help is needed to keep people safe amid freezing winter weather. They urge local officials to increase resources as dangerously cold temperatures persist.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • WTJU will broadcast live performances by local student ensembles from AHS, CHS & UVA as part of its Classical Marathon from Dec. 8-14 with shows starting daily at 7 p.m. Listeners can tune in on the air & online.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albemarle County Public Schools and county police finalized a memorandum outlining school resource officers’ roles at three high schools and a middle school last week. The agreement based on community input specifies officers handle emergency responses only (they do not enforce routine discipline) and require specialized training.  Cville Right Now
  • The University’s Advancement Committee met Thursday to review Dean Acampora’s update on the Graduate School’s doubled endowment and the Graduate Excellence Campaign, while VP Luellen praised donor efforts, the Gratitude Initiative, and a new unified database launching in February.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Academic and Student Life Committee approved two new graduate programs and named two academic positions while discontinuing two degree programs due to low enrollment in a meeting held Thursday at the University (the changes now await state council approval). The actions aim to meet workforce demand and enhance academic offerings.  The Cavalier Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety advises drivers to check their tires, clear snow from cars, and defrost windows as winter weather continues to affect local roads (safety sensors like blind spot monitoring may also be impaired by ice).  29 News
  • The local SPCA warns that ice melt on sidewalks can harm pets as temperatures remain below freezing. Pet owners in Charlottesville are advised to exercise care when walking animals today.  29 News
  • Doctor William Brady from UVA explained that cold weather does not cause illness directly but creates conditions that help viruses spread indoors — dry air and close contact raise exposure risks. He advises washing hands, avoiding face touching, and staying home when sick.  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia Cavaliers wrestlers won both dual meets Sunday by shutting out Bridgeport and East Stroudsburg, with eight wrestlers debuting their season. The team will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. next week and aims to extend their record and reach Coach Garland's 200th win.  The Cavalier Daily
  • UVA running back J’Mari Taylor became the first 1,000-yard rusher since 2018 and was named a finalist for the Dudley Award on Monday afternoon at UVA, where he led the ACC with 14 touchdowns as the Cavaliers finished 10-3.  Cville Right Now
  • UVA swimming freshman Sara Curtis won seven medals at the European Aquatic Short Course Swimming Championships in Poland — setting European and world relay records in the 50 backstroke and 4×50 event. Men’s basketball won against Texas and Dayton, while football and squash teams competed over the weekend.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia’s squash teams battled Ivy League opponents at the McArthur Squash Center as the men lost to Harvard before beating Cornell and the women fell to Harvard then won over Cornell. Both teams will host Princeton on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. to continue tough play.  The Cavalier Daily
