COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Markets by Tiger is delivering breakfast, lunch or dinner to first responders today in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene and Buckingham counties — a national initiative to honor 24-7 Day with special discounts and free drinks.  3WV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Ting Internet is repairing a fiber cut that has caused service disruptions for many customers in the Dunlora area. Field crews began work at 8:25 a.m. and the company expects full service restoration by 9 p.m.—some additional customers may face brief outages during repairs.  3WV

CRIME NEWS

  • Albemarle County Police Department and FBI arrested 20-year-old Zaquan J. Thorne of Charlottesville and a 16-year-old juvenile during a Project Safe Neighborhoods Operation that began Tuesday, July 22 and ended early Wednesday, July 23 after a traffic stop revealed they carried firearms, drugs, and ammunition—Thorne faces charges for possession offenses and is held without bond while the juvenile faces charges as a minor.  3WV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charlottesville and Albemarle schools said the federal government is holding back about $417,000 and $660,000—funds used for Title programs like English learner services and teacher training—and have set contingency plans to keep these services running; school officials urged community members to contact their federal representatives to share their concerns if the cuts become permanent.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle County’s swift water rescue teams train hard and work with fire, rescue, and volunteer groups—using tools like fast boats and kayaks—to quickly help people when dangerous water conditions occur in both urban and rural areas.  3WV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tuesday saw fraternity bikers from Western Kentucky University’s Phi Gamma Delta ride near University of Virginia Grounds during their 10-week Bike4Alz trek, which has raised nearly $100,000 for Alzheimer’s research. The riders will make two more stops before ending their journey at the Virginia Beach boardwalk—donating funds to the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association.  29 News
  • The Center at Belvedere runs indoor fitness classes and other events that help over 2,200 members stay active and connected during hot summer days. Today, the center will host an ice cream social (a National Ice Cream Day celebration) in a cool, air-conditioned space to give members a chance to enjoy a treat and meet new friends.  Cville Right Now
