COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UVA Frank Batten School students joined 18 groups to work with nonprofits across Charlottesville and Albemarle on Batten Builds day to serve local needs — the event marked the school’s 16th day of service and over 10 years of community work — and they turned classroom lessons into real action.  29 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Central Virginia environmental pioneer Michael Collins, 65, was fatally struck by a car near Ruckersville in Greene County at about 6:10 p.m. on July 29 while helping a stranded motorist — his nonprofit said they are reviewing next steps for his projects and planning a memorial for Sept. 7 at Oakencroft Farm and Winery.  The Daily Progress

CRIME NEWS

  • A shooting in Fluvanna County led to a police chase that ended in a crash in Charlottesville’s Belmont neighborhood Thursday afternoon — leaving a man injured and a suspect in custody after fleeing on foot.  The Daily Progress

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students and alumni remember how former University President Jim Ryan supported student arts through events like Arts on the Hill — and they hope the new administration will continue his commitment while addressing issues with funding and performance spaces. The community values his genuine support as a lasting influence on creative programs at the University.  The Cavalier Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SOL scores for the 2024-2025 school year have been released for Charlottesville, Albemarle and Louisa schools. Charlottesville and Albemarle schools saw small gains in math and reading but still show big gaps with Black students and students with disabilities—Louisa County did better and school officials plan to use the data to help all students improve.  29 News
  • Local adult literacy programs in Charlottesville face uncertainty as federal funds are frozen and new guidelines limit help for undocumented immigrants—forcing Literacy Volunteers to cut about 25% of its budget and focus on fundraising. The change puts the learning programs serving roughly 400 adults at risk while they work to adjust to the new funding rules.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • Charlottesville and Albemarle schools are fully staffed with nurses—each school has a dedicated nurse and a floater for absences. School officials said trained staff help manage health issues like allergies and asthma when the nurse is not available.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Justice Cleo Powell, a UVa Law graduate and double Hoo, has been elected chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court—she will start her four-year term on January 1, 2026 and becomes the first Black woman to lead the court.  The Daily Progress

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVA added two international basketball players, Thijs DeRidder and Johann Grunloh, who are learning American play and life as they prepare for the season starting Nov. 3—DeRidder came from Belgium and Grunloh from Germany to join the team.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia football will open its season today at 6 p.m. at Scott Stadium against Coastal Carolina as the team, with many new players, seeks to build on a strong 2024 win and gain early season momentum—aiming to earn a postseason berth. The Cavaliers must balance offense and defense throughout the game to secure the progress they need.  The Cavalier Daily
