COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Living Earth School received approval from the Albemarle Board of Supervisors to create a 247-acre nature sanctuary — development will begin in the next six to nine months as staff study the land to protect local wildlife.  29 News
  • On Monday evening, community members in Charlottesville marched at a Labor Day protest to support workers' rights with signs and speeches. Union leaders said the protest honored hard work and demanded fair pay for all (unions).  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Google will spend $9B to expand its Virginia data centers by building a new campus at Meadowville Technology Park in Chesterfield County and expanding projects in Loudoun and Prince William counties — a move aimed at boosting local technology jobs. The company will also offer free AI tools training at local colleges — details of this program are still being finalized.  The Daily Progress

  • Muhammad Ali Rashid argues that the University must allow students a real vote on the Board after former President Jim Ryan’s resignation sparked protests—he says changing state law is needed to give students more power and stop future crises.  The Cavalier Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Hospital is converting the top three floors of the South Tower into patient beds to help reduce instances of turning away neonatal patients—this project, which will use AI-supported healthcare technology and has an aggressive staffing plan, is set to complete in 2028.  29 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new seven-story apartment complex is under construction on Jefferson Park Avenue to house nearly 400 UVa students—Breeden Construction is leading the work with plans to open the project by summer.  The Daily Progress

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia's volleyball team dominated Georgetown, Howard, and George Washington in matches played from Friday to Sunday in Washington, D.C. Coach Shannon Wells credited the balanced attack—featuring strong plays by Lauryn Bowie and Kaydynce Boothe—for setting the team on a promising path ahead of their ACC match on Thursday at 6 p.m.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia women’s soccer finished with a 1-1 draw against Georgetown after poor ball control led to mistakes; graduate midfielder Lia Godfrey scored in the 22nd minute before Georgetown tied the game in the 70th minute. Coach Steve Swanson said the team will work to reduce turnovers ahead of their home game on Thursday against Penn State (the Cavaliers hold a 4-0-1 record).  The Cavalier Daily
